Different Types of Golf Clubs & Their Uses
In the world of golf, there are many different types of clubs available to players. To get the ball into the air, these clubs come with various degrees of loft that can be used to hit the ball from different distances.
A typical set of golf clubs contains a variety of different clubs, ensuring that the player has one for every shot. There are numbers on the clubs; the clubs with fewer numbers are able to be hit further than those with greater numbers.
Various types of golf clubs are available for players to choose from. With these clubs, you can hit the ball at varying distances and with different degrees of loft.
Types of Golf Clubs: Woods
When used properly, woods can propel a golf ball 200 to 350 yards. This type of club used to be made of wood, which gave it its name. Modern woods are actually metals, such as steel and titanium, along with other alloys. A wood’s head is large and rounded, with a flat bottom that glides over the ground during play. The clubface is large, and the loft of a typical wood is lower than that of most other clubs, measured at a right angle to the ground.
One of the most commonly used clubs is the driver, or 1-wood, which has the least loft. Higher number woods are more lofted and can be used to hit the ball in the fairway or from the tee.
Types of Golf Clubs: Irons
When the golfer is less than 200 yards from the green, he typically uses an iron. The irons have a greater loft than the woods (1-9), with the 9-iron having the greatest loft. A long iron is one with no loft, so the ball can fly the farthest. A short iron is one with a loft, and a long iron is one with a loft. Four-, five-, and six-irons are known as middle irons, and they are used approximately 150 to 170 yards from the hole. A short iron is a 7-, 8-, or 9-iron that gets the ball in the air quickly due to its loft. Due to the difficulty of mastering the 1- and 2-irons, the standard golf set contains 3-through-9-irons.
Types of Golf Clubs: Wedges
Golf wedges are used to strike the ball high into the air before it lands on the putting surface. The loft of these clubs is much higher than that of the rest; for instance, a pitching wedge can have a loft between 46 and 51 degrees, and a lob wedge can have a loft as high as 64 degrees.
For shots up to 130 yards, golfers usually use a pitching wedge, while for bunkers and tall grass, they use a sand wedge.
Taking a full swing and hitting the ball 110 yards is possible with a gap wedge. The lob wedge is used when the ball needs to rise quickly but not travel far. A pitching wedge is generally included in golf sets; other wedges must be purchased separately.
Types of Golf Clubs: Putters
There is no doubt that the putter is the most used club on the course. In golf, it is used to roll the ball along the green toward the hole. There are different sizes of putters. The standard putter is about 34 to 35 inches tall.
Belly putters and broomstick putters are taller clubs and are used to give golfers a better putting stroke when they are unable to use standard putters. A flat blade or a mallet can serve as the head of a putter.
Players are not allowed to carry more than 14 clubs in their bags during a round of golf. Players tend to gravitate toward the clubs they hit the best, and their preference will vary from golfer to golfer. It is important, however, that every player carries a variety of clubs that can hit the ball at a variety of distances.
